Never operate a tube box with the cover removed!!!! The voltage is not at a deadly level on the top but it will make you're food taste funny for a few hours :yesnod:
Nothing like a learning curve! Had a weak tube and wanted a better view. Was not going to mess with anything but the power supply feed connector had a bad connection so I was going to "wiggle" it:lol:

I touched the top of one of my tubes and I almost shit myself.

There is not big volts on the top side of this box, all the bad stuff is on the bottom. I am SCARED TO DEATH of the high voltage side of these things!!
All jokes aside, for real, BE SAFE around these amps with big volts!!

phrase - "Technician's Elbow"
1. when you get bit by a box and jerk your elbow into the nearest object and cuss like a sailor for 5 minutes about getting bit.
2. when you are standing to close to your technician and he elbows the hell out of you after HE got bit. Then you both cuss like sailors; WARNING, may lead to physical confrontation.

For those that don't know, some boxes have a switch installed so that if you open the cover it shorts out the power supply. Causing damage to the transformer and rectifiers.

i seen messing it kill a great man close to me in quincy ,fla about 1991.they called him g-man on the bowl and the old boy had him one of those old big strappin' reworked 5k heathkit amps that had a problem with the relays sticking and hangin' up when he got off the key. Sometimes wouldn't key right.he use to have a long plastic spoon that he could reach into and tap them loose or knock'em down. One day his wife misplaced his spoon while he was dx'ing the relays started acting up. So he looked around and couldn't find his spoon within reach.. So he grabbed a wooden ruler that he had close by ....well any way what he failed to take notice of was that this ruler he chose had that metal edge inserted on the side. Unfortunately he stuck that ruler down there and wiggled it around and found out the hard way how much plate voltage he had. Suddenly......he was back quiet.......off the key and 6 feet in the ground.

you know its real cheap insurance to purchase/use a set of linemans gloves rated for what voltage you intend to work with. just food for thought. I wont go near my supply without them.
my life is worth $120.

Seems most don't think this way Linearone. Instead they just go right on and dive right in..... More powa to ya if you do this. But then again you might just find there is more in there than you will ever want to deal with.
120$ and save your life. Well invested i must say.

I guess I should have read this post a long time ago. had my tube box open and powered on. tubes looked dirty. tried to wipe the top of the tube with my finger and touched the metal wire on the top.
thought it was pretty funny at the time but not something I'll ever do again. Guess that's why my job description is truck driver and not electrician.

If you don't spend the money for gloves, at least use what hams call, "the chicken stick". Basically all it is, is a insulated rod with a wire and clip attached. The clip is attached to ground and the other side of the wire is attached to a bolt at end of insulated rod. Then you just start touching anything relating to HV and short everything. But make sure box is unplugged first.

I do not touch HV stuff at all! I know better. On a side note the 26 or so volts in a rotator controller will get you pretty good too! Learned that Sat:mad2:

Gotta watch out for that plate voltage.
I have heard of a guy, he was wearing some gold chains around his neck
leaned into his box, the chain touched plate voltage and killed him instantly

Of course I don't know who he was or his name, but after that I haven't worn my chains
