View Full Version : Magnum S-6 or Stryker SR440HP?
10 Gauge

I am thinking about just giving an export radio a try in the mobeal. I have narrowed down my two possibilities to the S6 or the SR440.
12 Gauge runs an S-6 and he sounds absolutely awesome on that radio. We used to have Swamper running around with his Stryker and he always had booming clear audio from that work van.
They are both similarly priced, the Magnum being a tad more expensive as it has a couple extra features over the Stryker.
Any opinions between the two?

I run a S6 and really like it. The dual mic plugs is a super bonus as my mic needs to come out of the right side. All in all it works great, replaced a Gen Lee that had a few shortcomings for me. Not in the radio, just features. Nothing to say bad about Stryker either, all in what you want.

Thanks for the input backwoods. That S6 is reallllly striking my fancy. I know 12 used to run a Stryker before the S6 and everyone has told him the S6 sounds a bit better.

Another big plus to me is the S6-S9 meters. I like a big meter like the S6 and Galaxys. I do not like buttons "like the S45" on a mobile because my stays covered with dust and dirt. As long as the S6's roger beep does not get stuck "ON" I'll be safe. Got a spare (S6 sized) radio I can use? Send it with the amp and I'll send you the S6 to try, beat that!:prrr:

I don't want you to lose your radio bro, plus the only radios I have to send would be a Phili Uniden PC78LTW, or a Comp Cobra 25.

Well I have a few spares but they are 29 sized and I hate to change brackets in my truck. I have a General Lee at 557's now getting fixed but he is waiting on a part. Oh well the offer stands.
FWIW I ran the Gen Lee and the S6 at different times, no one could tell which I was on.

Personally, I love my S-9. I think one of the biggest differences between the magnum and the cobra is the receive.
And no, I'm not talkin about white noise. And the top gun aint bad for shootin skip either. also, unless I'm wrong, the only diff between the S-6 and S-9 is side band. If you don't talk on upper or lower, you don't need the S-9. I also know someone who sold their stryker for a magnum. maybe it's personnal preference.
Captain Morgan has an S9 and hasn't had a bad thing to say about it.
Damn he beat me to the punch...

I am running a 1X4 all 2879's with my S6. I turn the amp wide open and turn up the dead key on the radio to get my dead key output where I want it. Works good so far with my setup. Now with big boxes and drivers using different pills I could see issues coming up. If I ever get a big setup I'll run a 29 but my mud duck mobile works great for me, how I use it:)

exports sometimes dont play well with big amps

I had both.the only thing i dident like about the s6 was the channel selector.Just has a cheap feel to it.After a while the rogerbeep button acted crazy. It would beep when it wanted and shut it self off.I went in and unsolder the roger beep and disabled it.Other than that a real nice soundin radio.
I also had the stryker.Real nice radio.had no problems with it.The guy that has it now loves it.
I would buy both again but if i had to choose i would go for the stryker but either way both good radios.

I run an S-9 now and everyone tells me it sounds great. I can swing about 50+ watts runnin barefoot or turn the power down to 1 1/2 watts to run my amp and the amp never gets hot. As far as the sideband i wish i had my RCI 2950 back, i think it was better, but im very happy on am, i have the nitro lights and it looks real good at night. I've also had a Magnum 257 and t think the S-9 walks all over it. Never had a Stryker so i cant say...... I think you will be happy with the Magnum

Something somewhere keeps telling me in the back of my mind
RMS VS. PEP
RMS wins evertime
this is kinda hard to describe without stepping on toes
some go for the bells and whistles
others go for the advantage
you can take 2 suburbans have everything identical
only difference is the radio
a cobra 29 or uniden will smack down the export anytime
and im not just saying this
this is a tried and proven event over and over again every year
cobra 29 or uniden 1x4 2290 driving 4 2879s driving 16pill
galaxy or magnum or stryker into a 1x4 2290 driving 4 2879s driving a 16pill
this setup will show you more watts
some of us call them ghostwatts
or unuseable watts
now back to the radio yes its a very nice radio lots of bells and whistles
and if you got a good deal on it then you couldnt go wrong

if a cobra or uniden shows say 20 watts rms on the bird and a galaxy or connex shows 20 watts rms on the bird, whats the difference? Isnt 20 watts still 20 watts no matter what radio it comes out of ?

I would think that modulation has a part to do with how loud and how clear they sound

I agree about the modulatio. I think the big diff would be this....yes, everyone uses cobras and unidens for key ups. why? maybe you can get louder, however I don't think watt for watt that one of those would be cleaner for everyday talking. and no, I'm not saying "all" cobras or unidens are dirty, just that IMO a magnum is a much cleaner radio watt for watt. If anyone has the set up to do it, I would like to hear a gate of a cobra vs. a magnum. same vehicle. maybe 15 miles away with a 1X2.

export radios and harmonics aka splatterwatts (off frequency watts)
http://www.mauldroppers.com/showthread.php?t=760&highlight=export+watts
have you ever tested that by using a mfj 259b as the frequency counter? I have tested my galaxys and they all transmit on frequency. Take a short piece of wire and hook it to the frequency counter stub on the mfj. Lay the wire on your coax or put it near the radio. Then set the mfj to the frequency counter setting and then you can really see what freq. you are trasmitting on. The longer you hold down the gate button the more accurate your test will be. So if the meter shows say 27.1850 how can it be transmitting off frequency and showing splatter watts?

I assume the 200HD drives the 1.2 so can the 200HD be run alone or is it strickly designed to run another amp?
If i were to run the 200HD does the radio(magnum s9) need to be turned down in power or can it be run at full stock radio power.

200HD can be used for either purpose.
The 200HD can easily handle full power output from the Magnum. I keep mine cranked wide open usually.... 5w deadkey swinging 25w (Bird)
