Hi there folk's, I have in my possession a Brand new Magnum S-9175 from the factory I just purchased a lil' over a month ago & a month into owning it I blew what the warranty radio doctor said was 4-2030 finals, w/ that said how many finals does the magnum s-9175 have altogether? I have a 1.1 standing wave per 2 different sets of meters, they both read damn near identical numbers. All I have in line is my radio (magnum s-9175,astatic 600 pd meters) nothing more nothing less. I use a ps-52kx power supply w/ a silver eagle microphone & an antron 99 antenna w/ 100ft rg8 mini coax. So after getting the 4-2030 finals replaced I bring the radio home very happy at this point w/ the overall operation, seems the radio isnt running as hot as it once did (Which is great) and I got alot of reports via locals I speak w/ on a daily basis saying the radio sounded better now w/ the new finals than it ever did.

So you think ok, so whats the problem, well I was sitting here last night (1 week after having it warranty repaired) & "POP" I heard what sounded like finals blowing yet again, my radio shuts down & smoke starts coming out the ass end of it? So now I'm really concerned because the 1st time the finals went out it never smoked, I just heard a pop but the radio actually fired up again after the finals blew out, this time there is "NOTHING" & it smells like burnt electronics via the screw holes in side of the radio. I'm posting this I guess to get opinions & or history if anyone has had similar issues w/ this particular line of radio. I treat this radio as a infant, I dont run any extra power to it, I run very low standing wave, I have brand new everything here in my shack, nothing old school to cause this I wouldnt think.

And again do you guys know how many finals in total the S-9175 has in it? And could a faulty power supply cause this? Reason I ask is both times this has happened I look up at my power supply and the meters are flatlined at (0). rather than reading they're normal 13.8v & 17-20+amps on key down. After i hit the reset button on the back of the power supply it goes back to normal as well as unhooking the faulty radio as well it goes back to normal.

Any and all replies is very much appreciated, looking for some advice/help on this matter. It is gonna be under warranty yet again but still I need to try & figure out is there something im missing here or did I get a lemon from the factory?

there are 4 finals in that bad boy.

as to your other problem...
the reason I'm not saying the power supply is the culprit is because the radio has a fuse inline & a protection diode inside the radio that is supposed to stop a power surge or reverse hookup from it blowing up.
Good luck though.

Yea mine does have the inline fuse as well, I didnt know about the protection diode tho, interesting never the less. So I guess that answers that question then concerning the power supply, maybe the supply is reading 0 on the meters is because its in protection mode when the radio fails? Am I on the rite track here? Thx for replying.

you might want to get the power supply checked out also though. even though your magnum is under warranty, 2nd time with blown finals is gonna raise some questions at the shop.

Well the thing is theyre both brand new, it isnt like im running an old used power supply. If the diode is shot in the radio then something caused it to blow, what could that be, cuz with the inline fuse it should go well b4 the diode, it is a 30a fuse inline that came w/ the radio, so b4 anything and everything the fuse should blow but for whatever reason its not and its allowing whatever is causing the problem to get in.

when you stated you were sitting there and they went pop
were you talking on the radio at that time
or just listening and it went pop?

ouch on where you got it from
and i would look into another shop more qualified to handle the issue

also im not to crazy about the idea of the 100' of mini 8 coax
might be a powersupply problem or it could be the radio
