With a 4 element compared to a 3 element, a little more forward gain, and a tighter pattern.

It will depend on your particular installation.

But it will be much better than a 4 element...

HiDef could tell you a lot more about the pattern angles between the two....

Hey oatmeal, my first beam was a m103 flatside. It was mounted 25 feet up (which is pretty low). I would have to say that it's a great starter beam. I really didn't like the 2 element deal they have because to me a standard beam has 1 reflector and at least 1 director element. Dx is very easy to talk and hear with this yagi. Hell if I didn't have hi-power mobile freaks in my area I could qso with a barefoot radio when conditions are good. The 103 is light (compared to bigger yagi's) and can be set-up with 1 man operation. The beam width is pretty wide...I can sometimes cover 2 to three states at once. lol If ya get it up higher or go with the m104 that would help that problem. The m103 has a 11ft boom and m104 i think about 16ft and more weight. I say go with the m103 and if ya wanna upgrade then later turn it into a m104 by adding more boom and 1 more element. You would just about have to go from a m103 to m105 to see a big difference in performance to me. Just my long winded 2 cents opinion

Well, I was thinking about going to a beam, and swap it out with my Imax 2k, Ive been down this road before but didnt go through with it because wasnt sure just how wide of a pattern the 3 element would have....because of the localtion the beam will be in, there wont be any rotor used with it...it would be turn into the West and be anchored down there so maybe the wind cant move it...last year I cut the trees and all the brush back, and think now I do have the room for a 3 element beam...

These Maco 103C beams, they handle the rough winds and harsh winters as well dont they ?...

When you buy these new, do they have the shinny aluminum color or the dull color to them ?...

Either beam will handle your winters just fine. They are a shiny silver when you buy them new. Put it up flatside and point it West and you will enjoy it in dx so much more than your ground plane. It doesn't take much of a rotor for either one so you don't have to spend a fortune on that. Even without a rotor go ahead and put one up. You won't be sorry...

10-4, sure hope it does..someone told me when u bought them new they was a dull color looking antennas now a days..I no it dont matter but thought Id ask anyways....I have a straight shot into the West, and thats where it would be pointed and stay there, have to many mountains behind the antenna to talk anyother directions.....yea I was going to put a beam up last year but I didnt do it, so now since Ive have the Imax 2k up back there, it does ok just want to make a change since Ive been talking dx more than local these days.....

Does this small beam need to be on 1/14" mast pipe ?....
Or can I used the same 1" Galv joint of pipe I have my Imax on now ?..

there light weight so you should be able to mount it on the same 1" pipe .... but they do ask that you to use 1 1/4"............

if you're wanting something to talk one direction you will be ok but if you are expecting to talk out the back ,not so good. i've had 3,4,and 5 's although there not the best rejecting beams in the world ,they actually reject pretty good! to me maco makes a real good and tough beam.you can turn a three element with a tv rotor ,which is what i would . i believe you would be better off than having them stationary. either way it goes if you want to talk skip go flat.

A vertical beam actually gives better coverage at the cost of a little gain.

Yeah, on the horizon because it doesn't develop the pronounced lobes that a horizontal does. Of course then you have mast coupling to deal with.
