Default CB Antenna Fold Down Adapter

My buddy was at my house today, and we where trying to think of a setup for his truck. We came up with a firestik installed on a mirror mount with a fold down adapter. But we where looking at the reviews on right channel radios for the fold down adapter and one guy says there is like 2 inches of play? Has anyone else had this problem? Also he said he might want a pot belly spring. Should the spring be first with the fold down adapter on top of it or other way around.

Go with a spring on the bottom with a half wave on top of that...
Its the only way to go

    Zap out
I would get alot more work done if my Beer fridge wasn't next to my workbench, and I'd be alot happier if my beer fridge would learn to restock itself

i've only used quick disconnects before but i would think the fold down would go on top of the spring....it would probably be more stable that way

as with quick disconnects i'm sure over time the fold down piece will develop play as mentioned....what antenna is going to be used on it? the lighter the better

I would use one or the other, but not both...

That would be janky bang bang.

Remember the spring will change the antenna tuning.

We are tuning our antennas arent we?

What is this antenna going on? Assuming a pickup? If so, you could always just keep a small crescent wrench with you and take the antenna off, when you need to. thats probably the best idea (with a spring). You might be able to just grab the spring and twist it on or off and get it tight enough? Or a mag mount, and unscrew the whip when its too tall, then you only have an added 4" or so on your roof... well, HIS roof.

Im sure you already know this, but a little reiteration never hurt anyone!

After he puts the fold down on the antenna, make sure he re-tunes the antenna for lowest SWR. the added height in the antenna system will throw the SWR off, similar to raising the tip on a tunable-tip antenna.

oh yeah, i got him setup with my old 4' firestik currently and he gets pretty good swr. I keep telling him to buy a wilson 1000 but he keeps saying it's to tall. Which is true, but i deal with it because i love my wilson 1000!

Personally i prefer the 5000. but i hear they both work just the same, the 5000 just handles more power. He can always unscrew the whip from the 1000 or 5000...

Im actually liking my K40 4' fiberglass pretty well... cant seem to tell a difference between that and the wilson FGT SilverLoad

Yeah, i have to unscrew my 1000 everyday because i park in my garage. It gets a little annoying sometimes but it's totally worth it.

unless im mistaken, cant you take the coil and whip off of the mag base on the 1000's like you can the 5000's?

I know the whip unscrews from the coil, and the coil unscrews from the base of the 5000's. I wasnt sure what he (MeMechanic) meant, and im not familiar with 1000's. my apologies.
