    Default Help tuning antenna.

    Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site and also new to the CB world, I used to use one everyday for years about 10 years ago and recently got back into it. A lot has changed with technology. I've done some searches but no one has really posted any problems like this. My Set up: Galaxy DX 979 CB Radio with a Vanco 4' fiber glass whip antenna on a 4" spring, running a magnetic mount. I've never had this problem tuning it. I hooked up the SWR meter keyed up on FWD and set the needle, then I hit the switch to REF and the needle hardly moved. Shouldn't it have gone down to 1.5 or in that area? i tried adjusting it but i wanted to post here before i start messing things up.. here are some example pics.

Try taking the 4" spring out of the equation and check swr's again.

It's hard to tell what your pics mean.

    I agree with this. ^^^
If it makes things better and you need the spring you will have to trim your antenna a bit, but don't get excited. Still go a little at a time you can always cut more off.

I'll bet if you checked below channel 1 the swr would be even lower. You have a 4 foot whip antenna, thats designed and tuned to be mounted directly to your mount, on a 4" spring. That 4" spring is basically making your antenna longer and changing the tuning of your antenna which would explain why your swr is higher on 40 than 1.

I ended up doing both. I took the spring off and had the same issue so then I trimmed a little of the antenna, it worked out great! I'm still trying to tune it but its much better than it was before. Thanks guys for the help!
