    Default Baofeng portable programing questions

I'm curious about the programming software for these Baofeng portables?
Can u lock out keypad entry?
Do they do digital tones as well as analog?
Do they do channel banks? If so how many channels and banks?
    Are there any programmable buttons?
Do they have any type of MDC or ANI type tone string?

I'm really curious if keypad entry can be locked out.
I think they can pass "type acceptance" if i can lock out keypad entry.
It might be a decent radio for rental stock.

    I use a Baofeng uv5r
i have about 56 freqs programed into it
you can press and hold the star key or the Scan button and it will scan what ever you have programmed
also you can go into freq mode and enter a freq by keypad and hit the up or down button then hit scan
and it will go and go
or hit the vfo button and go back to channel mode and have it sit on one channel or scan them all
once it stops on a channel that is occupied then just hit the mic button then it will stop scanning
you can go into freq mode then enter one channel then press blue button a/b and then enter another freq then go into menu settings to listen to both of those 2 freqs

we just finished up building a GMRS repeater for a school district and just bought 50 of these uv5r
and lets just say it has some good range to it
and these uv5r do a real nice job with a little extra punch to get into the repeater

i went ahead and bought the Nagoya na-771 144/430 for the little extra range
and bought the plug in mic with speaker
along with the larger battery pack
the little battery and radio by itself it felt like i was going to break it in my hand
so the little extra length at the bottom helped out

the baofeng and the wouxuns are pretty nice little units for what they are

i use a program called chirp to program everything in
or it can be done by keypad
i like the program entry setup then you can lock it to where it cant be changed with the keypad
also you can lock the keypad if your afraid of pushing buttons
also you can program certain freqs that you dont need to be keying up on and so you can lock out the transmit function

    Hope this helps

I was thinkin of using these as rental radio at the shop.. As long as i can lock the keypad so no one can enter any freq they want.... I might be able to get away with using them...i would have to lock out vfo mode too.

This is the link to go to for Chirp for the the UV-5r:

    http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home

I can only give you anecdotal reports of power out and battery life but both are excellent compared to other handhelds that I have messed with, but it still only puts out 4.5 watts max even though it says "5 watts". Still and all I have no complaints on either battery life or power.

I did get the triple "A" battery pack for it just in case I needed power in an emergency and I have the "battery replacement" car cigarette lighter adapter as well. Both work fine.

You can lock the menu etc... from the software.

Here is the refined link from the Chirp wiki homepage to the latest daily build. Try this for the best compatibility with the UV-5R.

Thanx for the info...I'll download it tomorrow on my work computer and check it out.
I think I could get away with using them if i can disable keypad entry and vfo...or disable tx in vfo mode.
I could most likly use them for 50% of my rentals..... I.S. radios have become the standard in the oil and gas indistry ..but i still get alot of companies and guys that don't require it....I just gotta find a wau to lock the radio down so they can only tx on licienced or open freqs.
    Thanx again for the input

There is fairly good Yahoo group dedicated to supporting the UV-5R.

If you had any questions about using the V.I.P. software (OEM) or the Chirp software, these guys can help you out.

yeap for the price they do the shit i use my every day ...if i drop it in a toilet at a bar "drunk" it does not matter just order another one..do that to the icom handheld and i would cry (10 times more expensive and 3 times the weight)

    only gripes are ..

display goes dark with heavy transmitting ..rf final is right beside display cell..comes right when it cools down

the gay changing led colors will not work if programmed via the computer ..in fact the display light does not work at all if set up via computer ..if done manually its ok

i have a 50w dual band amp in the car that i plug into it when mobile along with speaker mic 409shop.com has them

Three Old Crows has some stuff, too. I picked up an AAA batt pack and a AA batt back from them. If you use full strength AA batts in the AA pack the unit won't transmit as it is over powered, but with the AAA pack it works great.

I pick up the alt batt packs in case I need power in field with no charger.

Didn't have the problem with the lights when I flashed mine via chirping. There is a setting called and that limits light time or turns off in one of the settings though. So far so good with these lil radios.

    Regarding the keypad lock..,

On my UV-5R unit, it is simply to prevent accidental numeric entry. If you press and hold the '#' key (which also has the key symbol on it) it will unlock the keypad. Even if it was locked via programming software.

One caveat, I have only used Chirp to program it. Maybe the Baofeng supplied software has an additional locking feature?

they are banning them here to import after the 16th oct

plus any future imports of ANY radio gear will be only able if you gain a "License to supply" from that date onwards even if you are only ever going to buy one radio for yourself..this includes telling them if you sell it and how much for and to whom ..with monthly audits .....oh boy
