    Default Goldenrod antenna?

Those golden rods work great under 1kw. Got my ass handed to me by one once. I was running a 2 by8 on stock volts and a 102. The other guy ran the same thing but swap out to a golden rod and mopped me up.
Not sure why they work so well.

There are some that do and some that can't. Reputation is everything.

How do you like it compared to other ground planes you've owned ?

homer 55's version of that antenna is the whipping stick, and its what I use during the key downs. Its long known knowledge that a top loaded antenna performs the best.

The Merlin I made is not perfect. Bad weather and sickness stalled me on the project. Nevertheless, I can say that so far the antenna proves over and over again that it is a good design in terms of getting the job done. It consistently hears better than on the 5/8 I made for the project, and slightly better than the 1/2 wave oddball antenna I threw together 8 of 10 times, and gets my signal back to who I hear. Because the noise level is lower than the 5/8, and slightly better than the 1/2 wave, I am usually able to get a bit better noise to signal ratio which sends me to the Merlin most often. I have not seen any of the 1 -2 db or more signal improvement over the other antennas, but I can say it is a good antenna.
I like it. If one wants a consistent performer, small sized, light weight and apparently well built by all reports, this somewhat pricey antenna will do the trick.
