I'm thinking of amping up my Cobra 25 ... the little RM Italy KL 60 looks pretty cool.
Is that a decent amp to start with?
Also, if I get my DK dropped down to a couple of watts, will that take away anything if I'm running without an amp?
i got one, gets down for what it is...just a simple little box on/off...ssb/am..if i could start over i woulda saved up a couple more pennies and got good 1 pill or a 2pill to start off...just my 2cents...im fairly new to the game also...maybe even consider the KL203...
The Caliber has precious little amperage to spare.
What's a good 1-pill to start with?
What do those run dollar-wise?
The RM is only about forty bucks ...
not sure about a 1 pill...but with that little KL60 you're gonna want more power quick....if space and amperage is a issue and you dont wanna go too big as far as power as of right now i'd either go with a midnight special 250 or a KL203...i dont think they draws much amps...i hear a lot of good about the midnight specials..if you take your time and save up a little more to get something a lil bigger you will be happy...:yesnod:
That's what I'm afraid of ... wanting something bigger in six months or whatever.
I was looking at a MS 250 earlier today.
They look good.
It also seems about as big as I could go without an extra battery & whatnot.
Would I still need to get my DK down to run that amp?
with most amps you will need to adjust your dead key to best suit the amp, thats why you hear of a lotta guys putting a variable dead keys knobs in place of the delta tune...
you can go quite a bit more than a MS250 on a stock batt. and alternator...i know people that run 6 pills on a stock charging systems...
I used to run an MS250 in my Civic and it worked great. They get VERY hot because they are not equipped with a fan (that can be remedied), but I never had any problems with mine, and it got out for what it was.

The Caliber has that cool zone glove box ... it stays 40 degrees in there.
I'm thinking that would be a good place for a small amp to live.
That's where mine lived! I drilled a hole for my power lines and coax in the side of the glove box and it fit perfectly.

Personally, I kinda like the small KL 40's and kl60's. I know others that have used them for years without problem.
As long as you drive them light...they work ok
If your getting 60 watts out of the kl60...the amp will draw under 8 amps
Your stock charging system should have 20 amps to spare...
Your car should be able to handle an amp that will draw around 20 amps.....this means you could run a 150 watt or 200 watt amp...any amp with 1 2sc2979, 2 mrf455's, 2 2990's, 2 1446s will do. You could even do 2 2879's and just use it on low power or don't drive it hard...it most likly won't be a problem but I really don't know much about your vehicle.
if you lower the carrier on your radio...the radio will be louder but you will sacrifice a little range that the carrier gives...the signal will be louder so that will help make up some of that loss of range.
Like Primetime said...you could just put in variable power...you could use a pot or even a switch.
You will still get OK range with the carrier dropped, but a switch or variable power is real easyto do or cheap to get done. it will also give you more options for output power
KL40's and kl60's are nice little amps....but you really start seeing good performance once you start running over 100 watts...it might be worth your while to go a little bigger.

Set your deadkey at about 2 watts and let'er swing the rest. You'll have no issues. I would look at a Palomar 225 or 250. They are a sight cheaper on ebay, and reliable as hell
i really like my rm amps! a kl400 is a 2pill!! nice neat size 153x153x40+mm!! reall good audio on any mode! and loud! and reliable!
i would say kl 203 if you're truly concerned about lack of juice. Think it draws 10 amps with the mosfets for 200 pep. AND TINY packaging.

I went with the KL 203.
Can't wait to get it hooked up!

great to hear, a variable power on your radio would work the best. turn it down when the box is on, crank it up when barefoot...
what antenna system are you running?
When I sent my radio out to get it "peaked & tuned," he also lowered the dead key so it'll work with this amp.
I didn't even think about asking him to install variable power. That would've been sweet.
I went with a top load 4' Wilson Superflex antenna, the Firestik trunk lip mount, and a medium duty spring.
I've been working seven days a week lately, but I'm hoping that I'll have some time to get it all installed on the 27th.
I'll post up pictures if anyone's interested.
Slonez. My 2 cents is go with something like a 1x4. I have a davemade 1x4 drawing about 50AMPS in my car, stock alt, and stock batt. i see about 280 watts bird
